Finding your community through dance

Let’s be real. Making new friends as an adult is surprisingly difficult. Between work, responsibilities, and the mental load of everyday life, so many of us feel disconnected. But the truth is, we need good connections that fill our cups! We need places where we feel seen, supported, and free to be ourselves. For women and non-binary folks in San Diego, building that kind of community doesn’t have to feel so daunting, and one of the most joyful ways to start is through dance classes!

Skip the Small Talk, Start with Shared Energy

One of the easiest ways to make genuine connections as an adult is by showing up to a space where everyone’s there for the same reason. In dance cardio and choreography classes, there’s a natural sense of shared energy. You’re not forced into awkward icebreakers—you’re sweating, laughing, moving, and celebrating movement together. It can start connections without pressure.

And when you keep showing up? That’s when it starts to turn into a community for you.

Pick Spaces that Feel Aligned

Fitness studios have a wide variety of goals and environments. Spaces that work well for some might not work for you, and that’s ok! If you’re looking to find your people, choose classes in San Diego that feel welcoming, inclusive, and aligned with your values. Look for spaces that prioritize self-love, empowerment, and authenticity. Places where you can show up dressed the way you want. Places where you can feel free to move and release whatever you’re facing in the outside world.

Say Yes to the After-Class Hang

Building community can often happen outside the class too. Say yes to that coffee invite. Stick around for the post-class chat for a little bit. Compliment someone’s dance moves. Make time for a studio event. These little moments are what turn classmates into friends, and friends into your daily people!

Show Up as You Are

This is your reminder: you don’t have to be a “dancer” to take a dance class. You don’t have to be super outgoing to make friends. You just have to start showing up, and let the rest unfold. Community can form in many different ways, and the ones that matter most are the ones that feel authentic to YOU.
